What’s New at Ice Ball 2022?

It is turning out to be a true Texas scorcher this summer. So, let’s talk about something really fun, really icy, and really important for kids in our community – Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 2022 Ice Ball Gala. It may be hotter than an inferno outside, but this year’s gala promises to be the coolest ticket in town, offering many new elements and surprises, in addition to the features guests have come to know and love. There’s a new location, new games, new super silent auction items, and the same important mission; changing children’s lives for the better, forever.  You can stay cool while helping kids at the same time. What’s not to love?

“This year’s Ice Ball will be held at the JW Marriott in downtown Austin,” said Emily Franke, VP of Development for BBBS.

The venue is just one of the new components of this year’s gala. “We are also excited to welcome a new auctioneer,” said Emily. “Professional auctioneer David Ackel will be handling this year’s live auction.”

Ice Ball guests will also enjoy some new activities. A new game called Buried Treasure will feature a treasure box with fine jewelry locked inside. 100 keys to the treasure box will be available for $75 each. Key holders will have the chance to try to open the box, but only one key will access the treasure, and that key holder will win the jewelry.

Another new cocktail hour activity is the Typewriter Rodeo. A group of poets with vintage typewriters will be on hand as guests arrive. The poets will ask guests some questions and then they’ll create unique poems for participants.

“All of these new activities simply add to the excitement of an already exceptional night,” said Dr. Leah Newkirk Meunier, BBBS’ CEO. “This is such an important night for BBBS and in turn for the children in our community. We are always working to bring fresh ideas and energy to the event, to complement the special things that Ice Ball is known for.”

In addition to taking photos in front of the ice sculpture, enjoying a signature cocktail, and reconnecting with friends, guests will be able to bid on numerous silent auction and ‘super silent’ auction items including a Dulce Vida Tequila Tasting Party for 50, and a 4-night getaway at Casa Arum Hotel in San Miguel, Mexico.

During the evening’s main program, participants will enjoy a seated dinner, a rousing game of Heads or Tails, an exciting Live Auction with exclusive trips and packages, and the evening’s ‘mission moment’ featuring one of our special matches. This year’s Ice VII Honorees, Laura, and Kyndel Bennett, will also be recognized for their ongoing support and contributions to both BBBS and Ice Ball.

The evening will culminate in a celebratory Big After party with music by the Love & Happiness Band.

“I’m so excited for the opportunity to gather with our supporters – in person – to celebrate the mission we work for all year long,” said Leah. “It’s a great night for our guests, and, most of all, for kids in our community.”

Despite the new features, Ice Ball’s goal remains the same: sharing BBBS’ mission with friends and supporters. “Ice Ball is an opportunity for people to see firsthand the impact their contribution makes on a child’s future and on our community,” said Emily.

“Our goal is to raise $1 million to help more kids this year,” she said. “And we are well on our way to achieving that goal thanks to the hard work of our Ice Ball Host Committee and our event Chairs, Sarah and Albert Swantner.”

Though the date is fast approaching, there may still be some surprises ahead. If you don’t want to miss out, Emily suggests you act now. “There are only a few tables left! Make sure you purchase your table or tickets today at AustinIceBall.org. And, if you can’t attend the event itself, you can still make a difference by donating at BigMentoring.org or bidding in the online silent auction which opens August 25.”

“When we work together, we can provide more children with the support they need to feel valued, realize their potential, and thrive, for a lifetime,” said Emily. “Why not take this opportunity to make an impact in a fun way? You can beat the heat and make a difference at the same time.”
