2024 Promising Futures Scholarship Ceremony

2024 Promising Futures Scholarship Ceremony

It was a roomful of encouragement, support, and pride as 29 students accepted scholarships at Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 38th Annual Promising Futures Scholarship Ceremony. Some were in caps and gowns, some were in their best outfits, but all were excited about taking this next step toward their future goals. Over 120 family members, friends, and Bigs were on hand to cheer and honor our students on this special day.

“This year’s scholarship ceremony was wonderful,” said Jade Lopez, BBBS Scholarship Coordinator. “I wanted this day to be memorable for our mentees and families and to highlight our youths’ accomplishments.”

BBBS CEO Kedrick Jeffries kicked off the ceremony with a welcome and words of encouragement. “Our agency was the first in the nation to set up a scholarship program due to a generous donation from Balie and Beverly Griffith,” said Jeffries. “We’re all in this together. We are here to celebrate the culmination of your year of hard work. And I want to encourage you to keep on keeping on. As you strive to achieve your goals, know that BBBS will continue to be here as a resource for you. The world is waiting for you.”

Student achievement was on display as Promisees and Graduates alike crossed the stage to receive their promise medals and scholarship certificates presented by Scholarship Foundation Board President, Loraine Brown. The emcee for the day was Hannah Rucker, anchor for KVUE News. Special spotlight speaker was Alyzeah Mafnas, a BBBS mentee and former scholarship recipient.

Alyzeah became a Little Sister when she was 8 years old, and she recently attained her real estate license utilizing her scholarship funds. “Today at 21, I’m still proud to be a part of the BBBS program,” said Alyzeah, “and I would like to thank my Big Sister Crystal who is here with me.”

“It is heartwarming to see so many here to honor the achievements that BBBS Littles have made, and to support the opportunities that await them in the future,” said Alyzeah.

She encouraged students by sharing some simple truths she has learned on her own journey. Number one is the power of our mind and its influence on our actions. She also reminded students of the importance of self-reflection and awareness, to remember that change is inevitable – even if it is their own change of mind, and the value of self-discipline. “These things turn dreams into reality. Dream big but take purposeful action to bring these dreams to life” said Alyzeah. “And last, but not least, remember gratitude. Take time to acknowledge and cherish the things you have now.”

Students took her words to heart as they expressed appreciation upon receiving their medals and scholarship certificates. Many had their families and Bigs with them.

“The Scholarship Program is really exciting because it gives a lot of people an opportunity to be in college and it just opens more opportunities for people that don’t have the ability to attend,” said Annalia, a BBBS Scholarship Promisee. “Right now, I’m leaning toward becoming a marine biologist. I’m looking at colleges that have a program and will help me get my dream job.”

Annalia’s Big Sister Jessica was right there cheering her on. “Of course, I’m proud of her. I’m always proud of her,” said Jessica. “I’m very glad she’s focused on going to college. I think it’s important and we’ve had lots of conversations around it. I’m here to support her as much as I can through that journey.”

Mariela and her Big Sister Elisa were also excited to be participating in the day’s events. “I’m a Promisee and I graduate next year,” said Mariela. “I think the ceremony is pretty cool. It’s a great opportunity for everyone. To graduate and to see new things and experience new things. I’m looking into nursing.”

Big Sister Elisa added, “We’re checking out ACC and looking at their nursing programs, seeing what kinds of requirements she has so we can be prepared for next year.”

As a graduate, Michael, and his Big Brother Jared, are already experiencing the “next chapter.” Michael is interested in going to ACC to earn his welding certificate and become a welder.

“I’m very proud of Michael. He’s come a long way. He’s grown a lot… literally,” laughs Jared, as his Little is taller than he is. “He’s grown a lot upstairs. He’s a smart, intelligent young man and only getting better every day. This is just one more step toward that growth.”

Michael’s mom agreed. “I’m so proud of him, too,” said Charlene. “I’ve watched him grow from a little boy to a young man, and he’s accomplished so much.”

Michael even sees the growth within himself. “I’ve definitely come a long way. I think I’ve just got to keep going, keep my head on the straight and narrow road, you know,” said Michael, “and I’ll be able to hit that goal I want to accomplish.”

There’s no doubt that these students will accomplish great things. It’s the reason the atmosphere at the event was one of celebration. Upon arrival guests enjoyed treats and snacks, as well as special goodie bags of supplies. There was also a fun photobooth complete with balloons where mentees, their Bigs, and their families could record memories of the day.

Special thanks to the sponsors who made the day possible: BookPeople, Jack Allen’s Kitchen, Lake Travis Zipline Adventures, SusieCakes, and Viva Day Spa.

A number of BBBS’ community partners were also on hand to provide mentees with information about their programs and services: Foundation Communities, Skillpoint Alliance, ACC Recruiter, PelotonU, and College Contact.

Congratulations to our mentees, their families, and their Bigs, and thanks to everyone who made this such a special and joyful event.
