Tanya and Olivia
At BBBS it’s all about the relationship. It’s all about the amazing connection made when a Big and a Little spend time together doing ordinary things, which in turn elevates their relationship to a level neither could have anticipated. A level that provides the Little with a foundation for success in life.
“One of the things I’ve liked most about being matched is getting to know my Little Sister, Olivia,” said Big Sister Tanya. “I was interested in BBBS in general because I like kids and work with kids a lot. But getting to know Olivia specifically has been just wonderful. She’s so sophisticated, she’s really mature for her age, and she’s just very interesting.”
The pair, who look like they could be biological sisters, have enjoyed shopping together, playing putt-putt golf, going to the Trail of Lights, bowling, making a gingerbread house – which was a new experience for Big Sister – and attending Movies in the Park. They also enjoy trying new restaurants and foods. “She always has me meeting new people and going to really good places,” said Olivia. “It’s really fun.”
Amidst the fun, Tanya has enjoyed watching Olivia develop and mature through the transition from elementary to middle school – a time in life that can test even the best of students. “Olivia has a lot more educational demands on her, and she rises to meet those challenges,” said Tanya. “She is very broad minded for someone her age and is interested in so many things, curious about different cultures and languages.”
“I often say, ‘When I grow up, I want to be like Olivia,’” laughs Tanya. “Being a Big has paid dividends beyond what I could have imagined. I feel so blessed to be a part of her life and to watch her grow. She is truly the best.”
Their match is only about a year and a half old, but for Olivia and Tanya the impact goes far beyond the short time they’ve been matched. Such connections are a great example of the power of one-to-one mentoring and the ways in which it helps children reach their biggest possible futures.
